Brenda buzzed my phone bright and early the next morning.

I grabbed the device from the nightstand, swiped the screen, and held the phone to my ear. I scratched out, “Morning."

"I hate to burst your bubble so early.”

I groaned.

“The analysis of Dickie's whiskey glass showed nothing but alcohol,” Brenda said. “No poisoning."

My brow lifted with surprise. "Really?"

"Yep. Guess your hunch was wrong on this one."

"What about the toxicology report?"

"He had cocaine and plenty of alcohol in his system. Judging by the condition of his heart, liver, and vascular structures, he was suffering from chronic alcoholism. I'm inclined to think he died of acute drug intoxication and cardiac arrest. He had particularly high levels of both substances in his system. More than enough to kill the average person. That indicates to me he was a longtime heavy user of both.”

My face tensed. It was the simplest, most logical explanation. But somehow, it just didn't sit well with me. Then again, maybe I was making something out of nothing. "Just dig a little deeper."

"I can run some additional tests. I can use gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to evaluate the remnants of the whiskey glass if that'll make you happy. But I think this one's a straightforward case of poor life choices. Not everything is a conspiracy."

"I know. But my perspective is a little warped as of late."

She laughed. "I think your perspective is always warped. You two need to take a vacation. Have some fun. You've earned it."

"Even our vacations seem to go wrong."

"Maybe if you stop looking for trouble, you'd stop finding it."

"Maybe."

She laughed. I was hopeless, and she knew it. "I'll be in touch."

“Is everything okay?” Gianna asked with a yawn and a stretch as I ended the call.

She’d spent the night on the boat, and I swear nothing happened. Well, maybe not nothing, but…

“Looks like Dickie Jordan died of natural causes.”

“Oh,” she said, surprised. “There was a lot of speculation about drugs online.”

“Well, when I say natural, I mean cardiac arrest due to drugs. But for now, the lab says he wasn’t poisoned.”

“You thought he was poisoned?”

“It was a theory.”

“I didn’t know you were working that case.”

“If somebody dies in this town, I’m working it.”

I gave her a kiss and pulled myself out of bed, showered, dressed, and went down to the galley to fix breakfast. I banged on the hatch to JD’s stateroom.

He grunted and groaned. Eventually, he and Riley joined Gianna and me on the sky deck for our morning ritual.

After we filled our bellies, we said goodbye to the girls, and suggestions were made to reconnect soon.

Jack and I headed across town to find Elsa’s friend, Zara.

"That girl is something special," JD said of Riley.

"I know," I replied, speaking more of Gianna.

“I mean, I don’t want to put the cart before the horse, but she’s got long-term potential.”

“Ease up. You just met.”

“I know, but there’s something special there.”

I rolled my eyes.

"So tell me all about it? Did you…?"

I grinned. "That's need-to-know information."

His face twisted. "Don't hold out on me.
